Want to work in Korea as a student? Read this first.

As an Administrative Attorney working with many D-2 and D-4 visa holders, I’ve seen how often students run into legal trouble just by not knowing the rules. Here's a practical guide to help you legally work part-time in Korea—without risking your visa.

Why do you need prior approval?

Under Korean immigration law, international students must get permission before working. Even one unauthorized part-time job can label you as an illegal worker. A second violation? It leads to mandatory deportation.

Step-by-step: How to apply for part-time work

  1. Sign a standard employment contract (must include hourly wage)
  2. Request a confirmation form from your university’s international office
  3. Submit documents to the immigration office (online or in person)
  4. Receive your work permit (either as a sticker or printable document)

⏱️ Work hours based on your Korean skills and education level
